DO I NEED A TRAINER? FIVE REASONS YOU MIGHT...

Billions of people have set out on a fitness journey at some point in their lives. There’s the skinny guy who’s tired of looking like a twig. He wants to gain muscle. There is the middle aged woman with two  kids that left her with “baby weight”. She now wants her body back to some effect. There’s the older couple who are realizing physical activity is more important than it ever was before. Nine out of ten people fall under a category similar to one of these. Here’s five reasons why any one of them might need a trainer.

1   1.  Know-How

Any trainer who has achieved their own fitness goals with more than a couple years of experience working out should know something about the types of routines that will cater to your goals most effectively. They have most likely done their extensive research and tried it out for themselves. This may depend on your goals. Not every trainer specializes in the same thing. I will cover more of that later this month. They will also know what level of fitness is safe for you to begin with. You may have needs that you weren’t aware of such as stability and coordination training. That leads me to reason number two.

2. You Need A Plan!

Reaching your fitness goal is going to take some time and consistency. It’s really hard to be consistent if you don’t have a plan. There’s really no way to stay on track and measure your progress if you just go in and freestyle your workouts every week. A plan will also allow the proper rest for particular muscle groups while getting the most out of others. Your trainer can help you put together a plan that fits your schedule and your lifestyle. They should have experience with doing this already.

3. Accountability

Your trainer is that person in the gym who better be making sure that you are performing to your full potential and not just going through the motions. His/her reputation depends on it. I know many of us have been lucky to have a friend who cheers you on during a workout session and that’s great. But truthfully he/she doesn't care as much and you hardly hear from that buddy on your off days or days when you’re alone. I believe part of a trainer’s job is keeping up with you even when you’re not together. Your success is their success and we both know one or two good days a week is not going to get you to your goal.

4. Safety

There are over 700 functional muscles and 900 ligaments in the body. Many of them are vulnerable to injury when repeatedly placed under stress. That’s why it’s important to make sure you are performing strenuous exercises with correct form using safe increments and workloads. If your future trainer is like me, they are passionate. They have studied how to do a squat more times than they can count. They will be keen to bad habits that your “gym bro” won’t even notice.  Furthermore, they should know how to correct these habits or weaknesses using accessory exercises.

5. Goal Setting

If they have been in gyms for significant time and they have gotten results for themselves and others, they have an idea of what’s reasonable versus what may be difficult to achieve in a safe manner. They will also know about how long it should take. It’s important to have specific attainable goals.

At the end of the day, it’s always up to you to get what you want. A trainer can’t perform miracles but he/she can definitely help you get there and in a position where you can keep going above and beyond. I still remember my first trainer experience. I think the most important thing he did for me was make me realize exactly what I was capable of and the level of effort I needed to put in. I literally never experienced the effects of that type of output until I was TRAINED! Eventually I developed an interest in doing the same thing for others.
